While the piece speaks eloquently to the rich gifts of a summer
season, it's theme later became the classic spiritual 'Going Home'. And that's become ingrained in the general consciousness as a song identified
with the American south, which is quite the cultural distance from where we've
been.
But my notion of 'the New World' has broadened
considerably while on this journey. Then the work brought home from our
August/September travels changed my mind altogether and Dvořák's evocative tune
now seems wholly appropriate.
Set to a cut taken from a classic recording made in the 50's by
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and under the estimable direction of Fritz
Reiner, here's a selection of fieldwork culled from what we gathered late this
summer, traveling along the Superior Basin while In Search of Perfect Light...
